What Are The Differences In The Volkswagen Atlas And The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport?

823 × 550?

Many New Jersey drivers know the Volkswagen Atlas well. As the largest SUV for the VW brand, this luxury SUV has become a favorite for families who are searching for space, power, and lavish amenities. Now, there is the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport in the lineup, which is new for the 2020 model year. These two models look very similar on the outside, but what are the differences lying within?

  • Size - The original Atlas fits seven and the Atlas Cross Sport has seats for five. This doesn't mean that the Atlas Cross Sport can't be used for cargo, though, as it boasts up to 77.8 cubic feet of space when the rear seats are folded flat. For reference, the larger Atlas offers up to 96.8 cubic feet of cargo room.
  • Power - Both models will have two engines available (the Atlas Cross Sport will have a second engine available later in the year). The VW Atlas includes either the standard 2.0-liter turbo that comes with 235-horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque or the available 3.6-liter V6 that includes up to 276-horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque. It can also tow up to 5,000-pounds. The VW Atlas Cross Sport includes the same engine options and towing capacity but offers better over-all handling due to its smaller size.
  • Design - While the two do look alike, the Atlas Cross Sport does contain more of a sloped rear roofline to make it more coupe-like. The Atlas is more rugged.
